The return of Scott and Bailey to ITV (hurrah!)

And a triumphant one it was too. Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp in Scott and Bailey series 2 ITV

Monday night’s episode started in the ladies’, with the DCI panicking over a TV appearance. That scene was swiftly followed by Scott and Bailey walking and talking their way out of the police station. An homage to Cagney and Lacey?

You betcha.

What a treat. We got to see a little more of Janet Scott’s home life, domestic catastrophe brewing up nicely between her husband and her mother who’s come to stay for THREE months.

Back at Rachel Bailey’s flat we discover she has a wayward brother she’s kept very quiet about.

In true Cagney and Lacey tradition, full details of the actual crime weren’t disclosed until later when we discover there’s a serial murderer on the loose torturing and burning their victims. Thankfully the crime isn’t solved in a single episode, so there’s time for development and a little mystery and suspense – not the mad rush of a ‘monster of the week’ format favoured by a lot of TV cop dramas.

There was drama, humour, snappy dialogue and a cast of great actors. Oh – and did I mention the chemistry between Lesley Sharp and Suranne Jones? Female buddies on prime time TV – what a treat. Thank you ITV1!

All in all a welcome and successful return. I enjoyed it so much I won’t even mention the incongruous yellow police tape used at one of the crime scenes. (Damn, I just did.)

Looking forward to the next episode.
